I'll second that motion.  I've been running 'slop' antennas ("measurements?
We don't need no steenking measurements!") for a long time.  A lot of them
worked poorly, but the best of them is a doublet or off-center-fed wire fed by
 ladder-line with a tuner at the shack end.  I've at times been pleasantly
surprised by signal reports from DX.
