I think that Frank found his problem and has gotten it working.
But since the subject of USB to Serial adaptors has been brought up, I'll
comment.
I've found that those USB to Serial adaptors that use the FTDI chipset are
the most compatible. Moreover, the FTDI chipset, supposedly, is the only
one that is MS Vista compatible.

Have you tried connecting directly to a serial port without attempting to
use the USB-Serial adapter? I have found that not all of these adapters are
created equally and some work and some don't, depending on the application.

HRD behaves the same if cable is connected or disconnected.
My only reason for using HRD was to verify the Yaesu CT-62 cable
and the USBMAX USB-SERIAL adapter for my Windows XP PC.
