My store bought version from Array solutions works great but you are right, you don't need to spend a lot of money to get this antenna. On the other hand if you want to save some time or purchase some of the parts, Jay sells everything you need including the mast, wire, preamp, limiter, as well as the controller. I have some installation tips, pictures, and test results on my web page for anyone considering any of the store bought componants. One of my "mods" to his controller is a switch to disable the common grounds that you mentioned.
