Ignore what the USPS says about air mail.  If you don't put that wording on
mail especially envelopes
(best to use air mail envelopes that can be bought
from several sources NOT USPS) then it goes Ok until it reaches some point
outside the USA then without the airmail designation it may go plain surface
mail.

My understanding is that with air mail stamps it does get to countries we
have treaties with for global priority mail.  Otherwise no telling how it
goes.

A rule of thumb...USA air mail and air mail envelopes.  Or as they say in
South America it will arrive sime time (maybe never).
