Back when Gov Zell Miller took office, the Legislature eliminated Amateur Radio Tags from the Exemption of Fees it once enjoyed.
I wrote a letter to then Gov Miller basically telling him that the fee was a slap in the face to generous ham Radio Operators who gave much of their time and resources to aid the citizens of Georgia during periods of need and Life Emergency situations like Tornadoes, Floods, etc.
As a result, the governor listened and eliminated the Fee for Amateurs.
One Letter. Basic Reason and a Governor who listened and took action. This was all it took.
I was not a fan of Zell Miller until he stood up and took action. I respect him for this. This is what persons in authoritative positions "Should" do for those they serve. Use common Sense!
Hams over the state should contact their congressmen and especially the governor.
It's plain and simple. Hams are offended that the state charges them to proudly display their call signs on their Tags. Again, a slap in the face of those who do so much good to aid their fellow citizens.
let it be known.

I'm pretty sure this used to be free but that was changed sometime in the not-so-distance past to help with the Georgia budget crisis.
It was a topic of discussion back in June of 2010, here is the thread that may help explain this better.

I had to pay the $35 in Effingham County (nr Savannah). Has the ARRL, SECC or SEDXC communicated with the Governor regarding this issue? We all spend a lot of $$ to provide the state with free emergency communications!!! Bruce AA4Z In a message dated 9/16/2011 11:53:11 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, n4nx at comcast.net writes: I remember seeing several postings about NOT having to pay the Vanity Plate charge of $35 on Georgia License plates for HAM call signs. It is clearly listed as a charge on the renewal form. So just how does one avoid this charge? Does the approach vary by county? Anyone been able to avoid the charge in Fulton County? Please share your experiences.
