[SEDXC] HyGain T2X Rotator Question

I have a used T2X. I was recently told by someone with expertise with these units that they were prone to brake failure if they were pre-1983 production. Anyone in the club have any experience with these rotators and can elaborate. I have contacted Norm's and he wants between $325 and $400 to "upgrade" this rotator to post-1983 configuration with increased braking and control box modifications. If this rotator has a good track record I am incline to put it up and let 'er rip!
