This is an extension of the bug which placed the (automatic) dits
on the thumb and left the (manual) dahs on the more dexterous
fingers - even for southpaws (there were special "left handed"
bugs).

Since bug senders were already used to dits on the thumb and dahs on
the finger, that became the "standard" for fully automatic keys
(single and dual lever paddles).
