I don't use SDRMAX so I can't advise, but WinRad and HDSDR can be switched between playback mode and live mode using the Options -> Select Input menu, so there is no need to exit and restart.

I don't switch applications that often so the power off thing is not as big of a deal.
The reason I was asking about the play/live is that I have been using SDRMAX to listen to recordings of my transmissions to check for quality and bandwidth. And to do some iterative testing (record, play, adjust, repeat), you need to jump out of live/record and WAV file play. Exiting the GUI really slows down the process.
And I was hoping that in the absence of some comments from Phil, one of the other skimmertalk guys would have tinkered around with sdrmax enough to have the answer. Maybe the ultimate answer is to dump sdrmax and use another SDR app. sdrmax seems like a rich application, but the lack of any documentation (that I've found) on the functional aspects of the GUI makes the willing struggle unnecessarily.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess "Phil" is N8VB, developer of the
QS1R.
You'll note that Skimmer Server loads its own FPGA code into the QS1R. I
beleive that code leaves it in a state that is not compatible with Winrad,
HDSDR, SDRMAX, etc., unless you do a power cycle to reset everything. The
same may apply to SDRMAX; it may leave the QS1R in a state that is
incompatible with SkimSrv.
But I'm not sure if that answers your question.

SS = Skimmer Server. for some reason it cannot load its firmware on top
of the SDRMAX stuff. Another way is to load CWSkimmer as an interim
measure, but pulling the power plug on the RX works just as well.

What's "SS"? To me it means "ARRL Sweepstakes." ;-)
Maybe you can forward the "answer back from Dale" (who is Dale?).

Skimmer has been working fine here on the QS1R other than needing to
restart the device prior to loading SS.
I’ve been expanding the use of this handy box into a few more uses. Like
replaying recorded band samples.
If anyone knows how to toggle out of WAV file play mode and back to live
mode, please contact me.
I’ve not got an answer back from Dale and it’s got me puzzled.
