Charlie,
with your voice and mike, and the tone, the combination may be overdeviating
the repeater causing a form of distortion, and eventually chopping your words.

Try speaking across the mike or backing off from it, and see if the problem is
there.  They symptom can be similar to what folks say they are hearing, an off
frequency sounding signal.

Might verify that the continuous tone and the voice together do not exceed
narrowband FM deviation.
