[TenTec] Setting up FSK with Omni D

I'm getting my first TNC/Multi mode controller.  I'd like to know how
straight-forward it would be to hook the TNC to my Omni D for direct FSK
instead of through the mic input as AFSK.  Have any of you done this? 
What is involoved? Is it just a matter of finding the correct connection
point on a board in the radio, or is it more involved?  The controller
I'm getting is an AEA/Timewave DSP-232, though I suspect that shouldn't
matter much.
