[TenTec] The Great Speaker Controversy Revisited

I enjoyed the TenTec speaker/audio thread immensley. I did not take part
for two reasons: 1) I operate almost 99% CW, so I'm easier to please, I
guess.
             2) I am hearing challenged to the point that anything other
than headphone
usage is ruled out. The up side of this, tho, is that
I have a built in filter
with steep slopes and a real cheap price!

I would like to thank you all for at least stimulating my thought
processes. I use an old 960 power supply to power the OMNI VI. It has
been modified in the field to be a 961, with the capacitor mounting
modification. I operate a lot of contests and for the past ten years or
so the supply transformer gets almost too hot to touch after a few hours
of operation. It never has hurt anything, but I'm old fashioned and
believe that if it gets hot it can't be good for it. I am telling you
this to set the stage for my latest/greatest TenTec mod. Since the
speaker is never used anyway, it occurred to me while the discussions
were going on that I could improve the cooling of the power supply. I
run a small 24vdc
cooling fan at 12v to reduce the noise. Still, the power supply heats
up. Then it hit me! I simply removed the speaker from the power supply
and found three very nice holes for air to flow through the speaker
grill. After being on for nearly eight hours now, with the fan running,
the area directly under the transformer is barely warm to the touch!

So, while my ears are so bad that I did not profit from following this
subject, I got a great direct benefit. If your power supply runs hot and
you don't use the internal speaker in the power supply for whatever
reason, this is something you might want to try. I preserved the
speaker, bolts and bushings in a small zip-loc bag and can reinstall it
easily when I sell the device.

Serendipity is a wonderful thing or in the words of the A-Team, "I love
it when a plan comes together".

73 es keep on TT-ing,

Jim, N4IR
