Thanks for the note.

I was speaking only in terms of Omni VI+ wiring of the phone
jack.  I can't speak about the SGC since I don't have access to
one or it's schematic.

I think someone pointed out early on in this thread that the SGC
was wired without the 100 ohm resistors across each 'hot' lead
thereby balancing the audio for stereo phones and for mono
phones.  If the 'hot leads were wired directly to the common
audio source, mono phones would short out the audio--which is
what you said you were seeing (hearing).
