Steve,
I assume you're referring to the TX-OUT and TX-EN jacks that have a jumper
across them. I removed that and tried keying it and it does still have the
sidetone, so that appears to be the solution.

I don't have one here to try but what happens if you remove the key in/out
jumper and key the rig? Does the sidetone still work? Otherwise, I know of
no way to pull this off short of using a dummy load. However, using a dummy
load, I've worked stations 5 miles away before!
