Good Point about not blocking air vents.

Small wood block can elevate the case above the carpet.  Best to have low
profile carpet, with dense pile, not the shag or deep type.

The use of the mouse pads or other rubber sheet may be the better solution.

Even on a desk, by elevating the case on an acoustically poor transmission
material like some blocks of soft plastic, or rubber, you could lessen the
noise.

That is, if you have already taken the simple step of tightening up the
transformer bolts so the laminations do not sing.
