Yes, you are doing something wrong. The amp does not need to be on, but
you need to switch the switch in the lower right hand corner (can't
remember what it's called) -- Standby/Operate (?). It must be in Standby
for the rig to transmit without the amp on. Makes sense, but it threw me
at first too when I first got the Centaur. (My Centurion doesn't work
that way.)
