Bill,
Thanks for the reply and I was thinking along those same lines.
(defective diode) On the IF/AF board there are 2 1N4148 diodes 
in the AGC amp that are connected to the T/R line and 8 more 
involved in the 217 switchery. The simple approach would be
to shotgun all 10 diodes. Would you recommend the same type
diode?
