Well gang, on this D104, CarlW2CSH threw a wrench in the whole thing for me
yesterday. Below is an excerpt from a personal email from Carl, and hope you
don't mind me repeating a portion of it here, but check out the site that
Carl has indicated.
It appears that the Astatic D104 is being produced with a response that
lends itself for CB/AM use. I always wondered what the response of the D104
xtal element was! So, it appears as though there are xtal D104's out there
that probably have a flat response, and those that are not, with the non
flat response D104's being the most currently manufactured. Interesting!
I've been told the D104 I use on my Omni V sounds natural, but I did find in
playing with the thing with a parametric equalizer that I had difficulty
getting any bass response out of the thing. Just so happens that the
response curve on the site Carl has included shows aprox. -12db up to
approx. 1K on an unmodified D104. I don't know what I have! Guess it'll give
me another thing to investigate.
My conclusion is that a D104 will probably, in most cases, sound good on
most of the Ten tec xcvrs. If you want it to sound better, acquire an older
model, or have those people from that web site modify a new one for you.
I wonder if the current freq. response of the D104 has anything to do with
the fact that no amateur web sites are referenced on the Astatic web site?
ciao,
Jay/KM6VX

No I don't jest in this case. The rolloff and gain
curve of the newer Astatic D-104s is specifically
designed for CB or AM. There is a company on the web
(URL is
http://www.angelfire.com/ma/electroservepro/d104.html)
that will take your D-104 and make a real SSB mic out
of it by flattening out the response curve. I have
also learned a lot about mics from Heil's web site. I
have an Astatic 10-DA and I think its a much better
SSB mice than the D-104. But as you know Jay its all
subjective. ......
