Ten Tec fans: In a recent article in Electric Radio Magazine, a former ARRL employee of many years, Mr. Lew McCoy, explained why mobile antenna designs like the "Texas Bug Catcher" are superior moble antennas. The reason is that the large capacitive hat raises the current loop and therefore the radiation near the top of the antenna. This greatly increases the efficiency of any short, base fed antenna. Without a capacitive hat the current and therefore the radiation is mainly concentrated near the base of the antenna and most is wasted in heating earthworms. This was explained years ago in the old ARRL book "The Mobile Manual for Radio Amateurs" , long out of print. -73's- K4OWN, -Sherrill W.
