I've had a scout for about 4 years now and it is a very good rig....I mostly 
use mine for mobile or camping, (Last month was elk hunting in Colorado and 
stayed in contact with my Ham friends in New York every day).....I would say 
a scout would be a very good first rig, actually it is the only rig ya ever 
need !...So many rigs are very complicated and the scout is simple to use and 
very tough....and you can add to your band modules as you have the money or 
need....start off with the 40 or 20 meter band module cause you can make 
plenty of contacts with either............
Now I have built a couple of QRP rigs and they are fun, but you may become 
frustrated in bad band condx's and you have to send many CQ's to get a contact
I would get practice with more power before you go to QRP.........So I hope 
I've helped you and NO my scout is not for sale, hi, hi! I have about 5 other 
rigs and I think they would be gone before the scout.......Now I'm getting 
ready to go west again 
mule deer hunting and my scout is in my truck ready and waiting to
