That's what headphones are for!

With headphones you don't hear external, extraneous (but normal)
noise.

Now, I'm sitting here in front of my VI(upgraded to plus) keying
away with the audio output muted in an otherwise quiet room and
I'll be hanged if I can hear the reed relay.  If I put my ear to
the top panel of the radio, yes, I can now hear it merrily
clicking away.  But, not while seated in front of it  If you can
hear it, (1) you've got the ears of a rhinoceros, or (2) you may
have a relay problem!
