[TenTec] Omni Noise

The Omni VI+ is one of the quiestest on the market. I wonder if the
noise in the speaker or phones is being overated based on actual
receiver gain.

My Omni doesn't have any perceivable noise when the volume control is
all the way down. With the input terminated into 50 ohms the front end
noise and IF noise will mask any and all AF noise.

With the AF gain at max, the RF gain at min (counter clockwist) there is
a small amount of digital noise heard in the headphones. I use some
Sony Pro-10's just because I happen to have them. There's no noise heard
in the speaker. Advancing the RF gain the front end & IF noise begins
to be heard as the control reaches the 1 oclock position. From there
on, it's all front end noise.

A word of caution. Be careful in getting the audio output loaded with a
bunch of C or L. It might take off in a supersonic scream, one you'll
never hear, and then the audio output device goes puff! It gets really
quiet after this event.

Question: With the RF gain all the way down (counter clockwise) and the
AF gain at max, can you hear the zipper noise as the main tuning dial is
moved? I'd like to read your findings on this.

Anyway, the NR (DSP) kills all of it. That's what the button is for. I
can still hear the weak ones that most folks can't hear so.... what's
the beef?
