This is one of those questions that could be just as easily answered by
asking the question "what key/keyer do you use?" Everyone is going to tell
you that whatever they use is obviously "the best".

In actuality, keys are a very personal thing, like underwear or
automobiles... that's why there are so many different models to choose from.
And IMHO, it's just like rigs... if there were *one best rig*, or *one best
key/keyer*... then there would only be one choice, for everyone else would
be out of business.

Quite simply, the best is whatever works best for you. Most of the upper
half of each manufacturers rigs have a built in electronic keyer that should
work well eough for any iambic paddle you should want to use. If you're
going to be a straight key op, then you don't need it. On the rest of the
keyers, memory keyers, etc... most of them do well what they advertise to
do, so reading up in the ads should suffice. Just buy the one that has the
features you need.

If you're like most of us, you'll end up purchaasing several till you find
the one that fits your operating desires. My best advice to you would be to
visit a few large hamfests, other ops shacks, or radio retail locations, and
try as many as you can get your hands on. This will save you money in the "I
bought it, but don't like it" department.

Just remember, it's a personal thing and *should* be. Don't let anyone run
down your decision. But you might want to keep this in mind... an electronic
keyer will put a big damper on your signature, or individuality of your
fist. It will make you sound alot like everyone else with the only
difference being your spaceing/speed combination. An op who uses strictly a
straight key will be easy to identify after a few characters. His cw will
have a unique "fingerprint" and will end up being like facial expressions in
an eyeball qso. In a word, it will allow him to "express" himself beyond the
mere code.

So, good luck in your search, and wisdom in your decision. You'll know the
right choice when it feels good.

Happy New Year to all...
