D-104's were not originally made for CB radios! There are ads for
D-104's going back to the late 1930's - long before CB came into being.
They have a rising response curve which yields a very good
communications quality sound. I've used my D-104 on Heathkit HW & SB
series, Drake B and C-Line, and Ten Tec gear (Triton 4, Omni C &
Paragon) with very good results and excellent audio reports. For a
number of years D-104's have been available with an audio preamp in the
base. This was probably intended for the CB market because the crystal
element has quite enough output to drive most ham rigs. I'd bypass the
preamp if I had a D-104 with that circuit in it.

Mic's are a very personal thing. The sound one guy swears by is the
sound another swears at! The fellow who says the D-104 "sucks" has an
opinion 180 degrees out of phase from mine. To me, the D-104 is the mic
of choice for amateur communication and works very well on all the Ten
Tec rigs on which I've tried it. I'm sure there are some low impedance
audio input rigs which would require impedance matching to use the D-104
effectively, but I've not used those rigs.
