[TenTec] 544 PTO Question

Would appreciate help with a couple of quick questions on the 544 PTO.

Am I correct in assuming that the only way to eliminate a very slight amount 
of backlash in one direction is by a PTO rebuild?

How big a job is it (or is it even possible) to swap the PTO's between two 
544's?
