I'm guessing that with the advent of the new license structure, we will
see a *huge* de-emphasis on VHF/UHF gear and operations.

I don't think the League and other No-Code friendly groups considered
this side effect. My guess is that satellite operations, packet/VHF/UHF
digital modes (the darlings of the ARRL) will all collapse with the new
licensing.

No-code/Slow-code folks have had to placate themselves with APRS,
Packet, Sat Ops, etc. in days gone by... that and local repeater
operation was the best they could do. Now they can join the "real"
amateur service and enjoy worldwide, HF communications.

With the large migration to HF phone, these modes are going to become
virtual "ghost towns".

Here is a look in the crystal ball: when the herd has cleared off
VHF/UHF, others will begin to rightfully point out that the amateur
service is under-utilizing that spectrum and we will lose it. The ARRL
will howl and moan and try to raise money against this "band threat" but
we will likely lose a lot of VHF/UHF/SHF spectrum in the coming decade
thanks to the restructuring.

Here is another one: TenTec will never come out with the 6N2 and 2M
handhelds will become as cheap as water....
