If you really don't just "have" to have the Windows sounds, they can be
silenced completely.

Just do Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Sounds and Multimedia (for Windows
Me) and under the Sounds tab, select Scheme: No Sounds. 

I don't know about you, but most of the Windows sounds drive me up the wall
so I keep them killed on all my systems.
