notice I did not suggest, as you did, going inside and crimping the "center 
pin keeper"....mainly because I did not know the following answer:

 I always ask a ham if he owns any "diddle-sticks"...and if the answer is 
"yes" I never suggest he / she go inside any radio!  You know what 
happens......
