Unfortunately, you really need an iron mesh, as it is magnetic field that is
as much a  problem along with electric field.

There were some semi translucent coatings reputed to attenuate fields, but I
repeat Distance, Distance, and Distance from the ham rig are your best
tools.  A steel box is more effective than copper.  The problem with common
steel window screen, if even you can still find it, is that the strands do
not make low loss electrical contact where they cross.  The boxes often
impede the cooling of the monitor electronics so you may need to add a fan.

I would say put the money you were going to spend on copper on a new CRT,
bought on condition you can return it if it is unsuited from EMI factor.

A way to check is take a portable shortwave radio to the computer store and
hold near the screen.

Sorry to not have much hope for the bad CRT.
