Jeff, thanks for the account, however your RF problem sounds like RF got
into the active preamp in the base of the D104 mike NOT the radio
necessarily.  This is a known problem of the amplified microphones of many
models.

Same with the SWR/Power meter reading off, you had some 450 line imbalance
that caused the diodes in the SWR meter to react also to the external field
around the meter.  Perhaps twisting the ladder line would have prevented
both problems, but certainly moving it to garage with balun and coax to rig
is also a solution.  Ladder line should come into the shack without many
right angles, or passing other conductors except at 90 degrees to those.
Spacing the line should be done a minimum of 6 inches if you can, which is
about the length of standoffs for parallel TV line sold by Radio Shack.
