There often wasn't a problem when the key was running in a circuit
carrying 30 to 100 volts and dozens or more milliamps. In the input to a
CMOS keyer, the voltage is only a couple volts and the current maybe
nanoamps. Then the contacts and pivots oxidize and the current doesn't
burn them clean. You might try modifying the keyer to have a 150 ohm
resistor from each paddle input to the positive logic supply to give the
paddle a substantial current to key.
