I"ve wondered the same thing Steve but I believe their method outlined in
the manual was intended to compensate for variations in filters. It reminds
me of the old tube type receivers such as the HQ-129. You had to adjust the
IF frequency to match the crystal's frequency.
On the Omni-C, what I usually end up doing is adjusting for the 750hz offset
then switch between upper and lower sideband and adjust the other trimmer
(whichever it is) for a hiss of the same pitch. I think the key to accurate
cw offset is to adjust the bfo with C3, C4 and C5 so you end up with the
9.0000mhz carrier and the same hiss pitch on both ssb N and ssb R. Then key
the rig or set the mode to "lock" and adjust C5 for 9mhz + 750hz.
This is certainly not "proper" but it will at least get your cw offset on
frequency. The scope or vtvm method would be prefered. I'm surprised they
didn't use a sweep generator to set those trimmers.
