[TenTec] Headphones (was any real live reports yet?)

It's the loudness somewhat, and the close proximity of the headphones makes
it worse . . . it's hard to actually drive your communications speakers to a
level that will harm your hearing . . . but mainly it's the high pitch white
noise that we get on the radio that is the real culprit. It destroys high
frequency hearing, when listened loud enough through headphones.   You can
listen to music with hi fi headphones, and while you CAN harm your hearing,
just by the sound pressure, it's really a different ballgame.
It's interesting to note, that people who use headphones with music while
they cut the grass or use power equipment stand a greater chance for hearing
loss, because they turn up the music louder than they normally would.  Also,
when listening with headphones, the brain tries to adjust and the ear
actually becomes less sensitive to the sound, so people will then turn UP
the volume to compensate, and the whole cycle starts over again, with
increased sound pressure close to the eardrum.
