I assume the "battery booster" products you are referencing are simply
DC to DC converters.  They take whatever power is available and level
shift the voltage up to 13.8.

That's fine, if you get stuck and have no other way out.  But be advised
that
these devices lose energy in the conversion process... its basic
thermodynamics.  And so, if you leave it on whenever you use the radio, you
will waste more energy and in the final analysis the battery will go dead
sooner.

Just a thought.
