Well,

Some people like general coverage radios for SWL... so if that's your thing, fine.

But, if you want a really good receiver, the last thing you want is general coverage.

This throws away a huge amount of performance before you even get started.

Since you are interested in DX and contesting, I'd think of it as a bad choice.

  Consider the Ten Tec Paragon. It shares much of the same circuitry as the Omni, the crystal filters are common, (6 MHz I think). These can be found at a reasonable price, and though don't have the same number of bells and whistles as the 756 or TS-850, do have general coverage receive.

  I used my Paragon in the contest this past weekend on 10 meters for a few hours. Was operating Hunt and Pounce until the pile-up found me. Had fun.
