Thanks for the replies and also the direct mailings on my question.  My 
Scout gets very unhappy
around 12.5 or 12.6 volts.  It just seems to like my 13.8 volt supply.

On nice days, I like to take a rig out to the picnic table.  It would be 
more convenient (and
probably safer) but not necessary  to use a battery.

Considering Minnesota WX though, that will be of little concern until next 
May or June unless I
start taking it out ice-fishing.
