Hi Bob,

I'm sorry this reply has taken so long. I and the family went on a 2 week
vacation camping and had a blast. Just got back yesterday and saw your
e-mail. --- Yes, the comparison of the receivers of the Scout and
Argonaut-V. I have used both in the past few weeks and used them side by
side. There really is no contest. The Argonaut-V wins hands down in every
respect. Mind you I do enjoy the Scout as well as the QRP lil brother,
the Argo-556. They both do a respectable job for what they were designed
to do. However, the differences come in the DSP filtering of the
Argonaut-V. It is simply awesome! The Argonaut-V that I own is the TXCO
version and there is simply no drift. It is ideal for digital work such
as PSK31. The Scout does not hold the frequency as stable on warm up or
even after an hour's use. --- but, it is good. I am being very critical
with the "no drift" issue as I crank the Argonaut-V down to 200Hz and
view the waterfall display via MixW2 software and start a QSO on PSK31
from a cold start and it just sits right there and doesn't move 10hz! I
can't do that with the Scout or the Argo-556. I think the audio is a
little cleaner on the Argonaut-V when going through the filters from 6Khz
to 200 Hz. The receiver on the Argoanut-V is definitely more sensitive
(at least in my case). But, again I am being very critical as to copying
a RTTY station I cannot hear on the Argonaut-V and no print from the
Scout. If both show a signal strength of S3 or more, both do a great job.
Its the very weak ones that the Argonaut-V seems to shine on compared to
the Scout. The audio opens up more on the Argonaut-V (6Khz as compared to
the <3Khz on the Scout). The skirt selectivity seems better on the
Argoanut-V as well. The DSP seems to form a "brick wall" vertically
around the chosen signal. The Scout with the analog filtering has a
larger slope on the skirts. --- I hope this helps you in your question of
the receiver comparison between the Scout and Argonaut-V. I enjoy both
for what they are and use both. I just find more pleasure using the
Argonaut-V when going to any digital modes. --- Keep in touch Bob.

Sincerely,

Jim --- N8LUV
