Yes, this change is coming to the automotive
industry ... many designs are already done ...
In fact, there's been 24 volt systems in use for
many years in some applications already ...
As to the 42 volts verses 48 volts ... Guess
what? You are BOTH correct on this ... as in:
The old "12 volt" systems spec at 13.8 volts
The new "42 volt" systems spec at 48.3 volts
HINT: The range is 115% of the nominal ... lots
of work to be done, as to standards and such, but
the weight savings are indeed one factor that's
driving <no pun intended> these changes. Ditto for
contacts/connectors that MAY operate at reduced
levels of current due to the higher operating voltage
and therefore are smaller <less expensive to make>
