Ed,

The newer power supplies from TT are Switching supplies.  Because device
failures are rare, sockets in modern electronics cause more problems and
failures than they are worth. The only application that warrants a
socket 
is in equipment that uses a programmable device that may require
upgrades by replacing the chip.
