Monitoring the two tone IMD products on a display
certainly has merit in making internal level
adjustments for a rig (such as setting correct ALC
level), but I don't see the correlation between the
resulting transmitter output level from a two tone
oscillator and the output level from an operator
speaking into a microphone plugged into the mic
preamp. The oscillator and microphone just aren't
going to drive the rig at the same level.
In other words, if you adjust your transmitter
properly in a two-tone test, what's to prevent the
operator from then setting his mic gain or compression
too high and ruining everything?
I totally agree in general that this is a significant
problem. The problem isn't just on the transmitting
end. Hams don't help things by failing to inform the
other guy when they're on the receiving end of audio
that sounds clipped, rough, or distorted.
