You forgot to mention an important detail in your excellent story.  Wider
filter is required for efficient noise blanker operation.
This was mandatory in the Cold War days of powerfull "Woodpecker", Russian
over-the-horizon HF radar.
Orion starts with just two 9 MHz crystals in ladder configuration followed
by noise blanker and then selectable 1-15 kHz first roofing filters.
