[TenTec] Orion and the new age TenTec

Hi Guys,

Ever have an extended CW qso using a Corsair for
example, and then change to a typical non-DSP Japanese
transceiver? The Corsair has a noticably quieter
receiver, and nicer audio, but the overall receiving
experience is similar.

If you change to an IC756Pro it sounds quiet like the
Corsair, the signals jump out at you. But the 756p
signal is not as sharp sounding and the backround
hiss/hash seems "unusual" in comparison. At times,
there is also some rumble as it is called. It's the
reconstruction of the audio from the DSP processor.
You get the feeling of missing some audible cues on
the DSP rig, subtle sounds that you would like to
hear, but the DSP would rather the audio sounded like
it was being played by an audio CD.

With the new generation Orion and Argo V, it will be
interesting to see if they depart from what seems
natural from the analog days and if there are
provisions for customizing the DSP experience. If not,
the older gear may still seem more attractive to the
casual operator.

Orion guys, let's hear up front if the same charm from
the past analog sets produced by TT applies to the new
gear!
