John,
I have used the D-104 and also an older Shure 440 (don't know if this is a
similar element to the 444, but it worked great on my Triton IV and TR-3.)
Both garnered very nice reports with my Omni D/B, particularly the D-104.
Some time back, I retrofitted a Heil HC-5 element into a D-104 head that was
gathering dust. By itself it was reported to be pretty thin. Used with the
Astatic pre-amp, tweaked a bit, all I can say is 'I haven't looked back'.
The reports are consistently flattering. There's not a whole lot of
'mystery' to the Astatic pre-amp; likely a number of the simple transistor
circuits can be adapted. In a given mic head, this can afford a given 'look'
if that is at all a consideration <grin>. Also, the Heil element, at abt
$30.00 or so is in what I consider an affordable range, given other options
out there.

real gud!
Many positive comments on audio w/that mic.
