100db of audio differential on a signal that I want to be able to hear thru
headphones should be quite enough... don't you think?
CD quality sound can be obtained from 16 bits of data. I know we're talking
apples and oranges here, but with current analog CW and SSB signals can we
really use more than 100db of discrimination? Of course, if we go to
digital voice, then we will get all of the quality we need.
I suppose it would be possible to get FM quality on a 3 kHz HF SSB digital
voice with the current technology (your current non-DSP rig, a
soundcard-equipped PC), if we were willing to put up with a little lag time.
But would this really gain us anything? Now... getting current SSB quality
voice on a 500 Hz HF SSB signal would be worth it.

with the BFO crystals, after finishing up a little dinking around with his
K2... the soldering iron gets used a lot more in this shack than my two
microphones).
