Al, one of the prime noise sources might be the monitor on the college kid's
computer.
If standard connectors, try another monitor.

Other sources could be the main switching power supply, a loose ground wire
on that or main mother board, or inadequate shielding of the plastic case,
or bonding of metal chassis to AC grounds.

It might be possible to swap power supplies with your computer, since
computers are pretty standard with power connectors, unless you have a real
dog there.
