Tom, the format used came straight off the Windows distribution disks. This 
is a known deal with some hi capacity hard drives - and I do have the Maxtor 
distribution disk to restore the drive to the full 80 Gig.  

In the meantime I'm looking at all the comments to see if there's something 
either I or my local Windows guru missed. Nothing so far, but thanks.
