simply does not allow the A to D and DSP stages to
ever see signals that are outside of those component's
own dynamic range.

IF DSP is done on the upper end of audio frequencies (36 kHz) with 24 bits
stereo ADC with enough dynamic range.
However, this must be preceded by analog AGC which is still the main cause
of problems.

Real HF digital RX would convert 0-30 MHz with 16 bit ADC and do everything
in software.
That might include all the Windows display bell and whistles so dear to the
younger generations.
