Is this 500 W spike that "most radios" produce always there? If so, then 
what protects the grids of the tubes in the PA under normal operation?

Or maybe I don't understand exactly which radios have this spike problem. 
Are there modern radios in this category?

I agree that ALC timing is tricky and can be too slow in some cases, 
resulting in this leading edge spike that has been mentioned, but, three to 
five hundred watts?  Well it would be nice to have exciter PAs beefy enough 
to produce that, but I sort of doubt it.
