Yup, I've had dismal results with DSP boxes as well.  They provide hundreds of microseconds of delay, if not milliseconds; ADC bit noise as well.  

The FL3 delay is in the tens of microseconds; comparisons between that and the internal audio filter didn't yield any appreciable differences with regard to the pop.

I did manage to reduce the pop by putting an emitter follower between the audio sample point and the input of the AGC circuit.  I imagine a source follower would work even better.
