Geoff, you need to replace the dial cord. In fact, probably only the rubber
piece, but as long as you're in there, you might as well replace both pieces
(just to be on the safe side). They are available from Ten-Tec for pennies.
Yes, you do have to remove the front panel and it's a lot of work but not
difficult. I also recommend not putting the radio back together for a day
or two and tune a lot on the VFO knob. Then make one final adjustment
before securing the front panel. I've done this to an Argonaut and an
Argosy. Each time I initially didn't have enough tension (the rubber piece
was not tensioned enough).

Two Argo 509 questions:
1. Have you thought about replacing the Dual gate MOSFET in the front end
with a 3n211? I once read that the mod was "drop in and tweak", giving
beter sensitivity and the 3n211 has built in overvoltage and static
protection? Has anyone seen this mod documented?
2. I dug up my argo 509 today and found it has one problem. The dial pointer
won't go below .075. Otherwise the rig works fine, and the tuning
using the dial skirt numbers is accurate. The PTO is in good shape,
so besides from astetic (sp?) concerns should I fix it?
Is it an easy fix? To me it looked like the front cover had to come
off which does not seem easy.
Thanks and 73,
