John,
If you only need to raise power slightly, there is a FAR BETTER way to go
than either proposal you listed.

IMPROVE your antennas!   You can double your power with a phased array of
two verticals for a given band.   You can use a wire type antenna on its
harmonics, where it will give gain.  (Double Zepp dipole for example).   You
can build a Moxon beam, a compact two element type that rivals the front to
back of a 3 element beam which is much larger.

You can put up a multi band beam for 20m and up.
Your electricity cost will not skyrocket as it might with use of a full
input amplifier; and you will see an advantage with IMPROVED RECEPTION!
